Istanbul Aquarium Welcomes More Than 15 Million Visitors in Its 15th Year calendar_month 25.06.2026


Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Istanbul Aquarium, Türkiye's National Aquarium, has welcomed more than 15 million visitors from over 150 countries since opening its doors. Through its ongoing efforts in education, conservation and sustainability, Istanbul Aquarium continues to contribute to the protection of marine life while celebrating this important milestone together with its visitors and employees.

Since opening on June 25, 2011, Istanbul Aquarium has grown into one of Türkiye's leading tourism destinations and one of the region's most prominent aquariums. Over the past 15 years, it has welcomed more than 15 million visitors, offering an immersive experience that combines entertainment, education and environmental awareness.

Having hosted guests from more than 150 countries, Istanbul Aquarium continues to contribute to Türkiye's international tourism profile while carrying out initiatives focused on marine conservation, biodiversity and environmental education. Alongside its scientific and educational programs, the aquarium works to promote sustainability and encourage greater public awareness of environmental issues.

Commenting on the aquarium's 15th anniversary, Dilek Çapanoğlu, General Manager of Istanbul Aquarium, said:

More Than 15 Million Visitors in 15 Years

Since its opening, Istanbul Aquarium has welcomed more than 15 million domestic and international visitors of all ages, making it one of Türkiye's most visited tourism attractions.

Beyond offering unique experiences for visitors of every generation, the aquarium provides opportunities to discover marine life up close while promoting environmental awareness through its educational programs and interactive exhibits.

Visitors from More Than 150 Countries

To date, Istanbul Aquarium has welcomed millions of guests from over 150 countries. Thanks to its diverse international visitor profile, the aquarium has become one of Istanbul's must-visit attractions for travelers from around the world while contributing to the global promotion of both Istanbul and Türkiye.

Highlighting the aquarium's international reach, Dilek Çapanoğlu said:

Home to Approximately 17,000 Animals Representing 1,500 Species

Today, Istanbul Aquarium is home to approximately 17,000 animals representing 1,500 different species.

Featuring 17 thematic zones and one Amazon Rainforest, the aquarium showcases marine and terrestrial species from around the world through immersive environments supported by state-of-the-art technology.

Visitors of all ages have the opportunity to discover remarkable species ranging from the highly venomous stonefish and lemon sharks to stingrays and Türkiye's first and only Gentoo penguins, while gaining valuable insight into biodiversity and the importance of protecting natural ecosystems.

Reaching Thousands Through Education and Awareness Programs

Throughout the year, Istanbul Aquarium engages thousands of children and adults through educational programs, school visits, workshops and special events.

These initiatives focus on marine ecosystem conservation, biodiversity, sustainability and environmental responsibility, helping visitors develop a deeper understanding of nature and inspiring future generations to protect it.

Commenting on the aquarium's educational mission, Dilek Çapanoğlu said:

She added:

Supporting Conservation and Sustainability

Alongside providing the highest standards of animal care and welfare, Istanbul Aquarium actively contributes to the conservation of endangered species.

The aquarium currently cares for 38 species listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and carries out scientific breeding programs for 15 different species, helping ensure their long-term survival.

These conservation initiatives not only support biodiversity but also contribute to scientific research and the preservation of endangered species for future generations.

Dilek Çapanoğlu commented:

"We continue our conservation efforts through scientific approaches that support the long-term sustainability of endangered species. These programs represent one of Istanbul Aquarium's most important responsibilities. Through our memberships in WAZA and EAZA, we maintain internationally recognized standards for animal welfare and care."

Special Events to Celebrate the 15th Anniversary

As part of its 15th anniversary celebrations, Istanbul Aquarium will host a series of special events between June 25–28.

The celebration program will include parades, children's workshops, face-painting activities and a variety of surprise experiences for visitors.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, commemorative plaques were also presented to employees who have been with Istanbul Aquarium since its opening and have completed 15 years of dedicated service, recognizing their valuable contributions to the institution's success.
