The Ocean’s “Hungriest” Hero: The Banggai Cardinalfish and an Underwater Success Story

In the underwater world, every creature has its own remarkable story — but some take devotion to an entirely different level. Today, we’d like to introduce you to a father who goes 23 days without a single bite of food while protecting his offspring, and to the meticulous work our team carries out to safeguard this extraordinary process.

1 - Not an “All-You-Can-Eat Buffet,” but a Specialized Protocol

Our breeding program begins with the careful selection of the healthiest and most vibrant candidates. But for these fish, appearance alone is not enough; we also allow them time in small groups so they can naturally choose their partners.

Once a compatible pair forms, they are transferred to dedicated breeding tanks designed to minimize stress and provide ideal conditions.

  • Temperature: 25–27 °C
  • pH Level: Between 8.0 and 8.3
  • Feeding: Specially formulated meals twice daily

2 - The Ocean’s Most Patient Father

After mating, the spotlight shifts to the “Super Dad.” The Banggai Cardinalfish is one of the rare species that practices mouthbrooding. The male carefully collects the eggs in his mouth and protects them there for an average of 23 days.

The most astonishing part? During this entire period, the father refuses all food to ensure the safety of his young.

3 - Why Do We Intervene? (The Day-23 Operation)

If nature already performs such a remarkable process, why do we step in?

Because sustainability in aquarium life depends on giving every fry the best possible chance to survive.

  • Inexperienced breeding pairs may end the incubation process prematurely.
  • Other tank inhabitants may mistake the fry for an easy snack.

For this reason, on the 23rd day, our expert team carefully transfers the fry into protected nursery systems where they can continue developing safely.

4 - Raising the Fry: First Course — Artemia!

Once the fry complete their mouthbrooding stage and consume their yolk sacs, life truly begins. Their first meals consist of high-quality live Artemia nauplii.

As they grow, they gradually transition to frozen foods — much like a child adapting to new tastes. This gradual dietary shift is one of the most important steps in preparing them for the outside world.

5 - A Legacy for Future Generations

At Istanbul Aquarium, our mission goes beyond introducing visitors to rare marine life. We are equally committed to protecting and sustaining these extraordinary species for generations to come.
Through the carefully managed breeding protocol we apply to sensitive species such as the Banggai Cardinalfish, we help reduce fry mortality and preserve one of the ocean’s most unique treasures for the future.
